Introduction to Black Pepper/Piper Nigrum/ BioPerine

Piper Nigrum, more commonly known as “black pepper extract” and it’s high quality formulation Bioperine, has been a staple in diets as well as medicine for centuries.

Historically, black pepper was used not only for its flavour but also for its health benefits. Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine have utilized black pepper for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties for ages.

Fast forward to today and we have a whole new lens on this fantastic spice.

Throughout this article I’ll use piperine/bioperine interchangeably as they are essentially the same thing

Let me first elaborate on WHAT it is first though,

The standardized version of black pepper extract, known as BioPerine, has made it’s way into our supplementation standards due to it’s fascinating role in absorption and digestion.

It is a patented + standardized product formulated to a high percentage yield of the main bioactive compound found in black pepper called “Piperine” which is responsible for its absolute myriad health benefits.

So much, infact, that Piperine has been extensively studied for its potential to enhance the bioavailability of various nutrients and phytochemicals.

The interest in BioPerine primarily stems from its ability to improve the absorption and effectiveness of other compounds. However; every supplement page will give you the same cursory over-view.

I’ll break it down much further below in the next section.

Alongside its role in nutrient absorption, black pepper, and more specifically speaking, BioPerine is also recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
These attributes also majorly contribute to its potential to support overall health and longevity.
As we get more stellar research and it continues to unveil more benefits of piperine, the integration of BioPerine into health daily supplements is probably going to continue to soar upwards.

Here’s why:

Mechanism of Action

Piperine/BioPerine interacts with numerous intestinal cells, increasing their permeability.
This interaction allows larger molecules, which would typically be too big to pass through the intestinal lining, to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

This is absolutely crucial for the absorption of complex nutrients and supplements that are otherwise difficult to assimilate into our body.

Bioperine is also able to inhibit the enzymes that metabolize these larger compounds, thereby increasing their absorption rates. The inhibition of these enzymes means that nutrients and supplements remain in the bloodstream for longer periods, allowing the body to absorb and utilize them more efficiently. This mechanism is particularly beneficial for compounds that are typically poorly absorbed, such as curcumin from turmeric. (See this post for more information)

Also of note: it slightly increases blood flow to the digestive system, which further facilitates a higher rate of nutrient absorption.

This is due to the fact that enhancing blood flow ensures that nutrients are transported more rapidly and efficiently to various parts of the body.

Additionally, as a fun perk: BioPerine stimulates thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat. Not by MILES, mind you, but it is something to note.

This not only aids in digestion, but also helps in calorie burning, contributing to weight management and metabolic health as a perk.
(Meaning when combining it with Yohimbine/Rauwolscine, you’d have a decent “fat-burner” with just those ingredients alone..)

BioPerine also plays a role in the modulation of drug metabolism. By inhibiting specific enzymes, it can alter the pharmacokinetics of certain medications, leading to increased efficacy and potency. This makes BioPerine an important component in pharmaceutical formulations aimed at enhancing drug delivery and effectiveness too.

Health and Longevity Benefits of BioPerine

The primary advantage of BioPerine is its ability to improve nutrient absorption.

However; there is a small army of perks that act as little “bonuses” in my opinion.

You probably won’t get DRAMATIC results in these fields, but again.. small “bonuses”

In addition to its role in nutrient absorption, BioPerine possesses antioxidant properties.
Antioxidants are crucial in neutralizing harmful free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to aging and chronic diseases. Research has shown that BioPerine can significantly boost the body’s antioxidant levels, thereby offering protection against oxidative stress (boop, citation here)

Also, of note with regards to most of the citations listed at the end, BioPerine supports the immune system. It has been observed to enhance the body’s natural defense mechanisms, helping to fend off infections and diseases.

Lastly, I want to mention, very briefly again, BioPerine also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, which are useful in managing chronic inflammation—in some of the articles they included benefits for arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome.

Onto most peoples favorite part!

Dosage & Safety: Lowest Effective Dose, Upper Tolerable Limit, and Common Dosages

When considering the utility BioPerine in your day to day stack of supplements, it is a phenomenal idea to understand the appropriate dosage to get the most bang for your buck, while avoiding potential side effects.

Research indicates that the minimum effective dose of BioPerine is typically around 5 mg per day. This amount is often sufficient to enhance nutrient absorption and provide some additional health benefits, like improved digestion and antioxidant properties.

However, as with any supplement, there is a rough upper tolerable limit for BioPerine.

A handful of studies suggest that the maximum dosage should not exceed 20 mg per day to prevent possible side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort or interactions with certain medications.

There are products that are utilizing higher than 20mg per day, reaching upwards to 40mg.

Those are still often fine for most people, but others may need to be very wary of including additional loads to their GI like food or stimulants.

If not… you may experience nausea and a generally… not so pleasant trip to the restroom.

Try to not find out for yourself, if possible.

Again, this are just guides to ensure you get a relatively safe and effective use of BioPerine and to help you make informed decisions when it comes to incoporating supplements.

it is ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT to be rigorous, when taking something like a bioavailability booster (like bioperine) if you are taking any medications.

Also, really quick, just want to make a note of this: General dosage recommendations for BioPerine vary depending on the purpose of why you are supplementing.

Most websites will just throw out the generic “take 5-20mg per day!”

For enhancing the bioavailability of other nutrients, a most places will have a dosage of 5 mg so that supplements can tout the “scientifically effective ingredient.” Most products that want to have a well-rounded product in tandem with an increased price-tag will often pop in 10mg.

However; there are some VERY individually specific goods that will pop in at the redline at 20mg of bioperine because they have some difficult to digest products, and to also give you some of the peripheral benefits like the thermogenesis.

What are common side effects of BioPerine supplements?

As mentioned above: It may include headaches, gastrointestinal discomfort, and possibly nausea if taken on an empty stomach

It is VERY important to note that these side effects can vary from person to person

Also of importance is their interaction with a LOT of medications, especially longer lasting oral medications, blood thinners and antibiotics.

Should I Take BioPerine on an empty stomach or with food?

Bioperine is going to hit you like a freight-train on an empty stomach.

You can do it if you are taking supplements alongside of it for something like fasted cardio, but be warned you may feel a little nauseous.

I Highly recommend taking it with food, as it could also bolster the absorption of nutrients in the meal.

How much BioPerine should I take?

As noted above 5-20mg works for most people, it’s probably included in your product as an additional ingredient.

Meaning whatever dose is formulated is there recommendation.

If taking it stand-alone, depending on how you are using it, I’d recommend starting low and building up slow once you know how you respond.

Start with 5mg and slowly work up to 10mg.

If taking it on an empty stomach, i would say no more than 10mg to seriously avoid feeling awful.

Hardcore athletes or people rigourously trying to lose weight work up to fasted cardio with Rauwolscine or yohimibine at 20mg per day and mild apetite suppresants and caffeine.. again.. HARDCORE.

Most people aren’t at a point of tolerance and sheer spite to reach that, I genuinely do not recommend it.

With a meal, you likely wouldn’t need to take more than 40mg at any given point.

Usually topping out at 15-20mg sees good results.

How Long do BioPerine supplements stay in your system?

Bioperine is a standardization of piperine, most results for it’s half-life are surrounding piperine.

Half-life’s are the amount of time for half of a substance to be digested and excreted by the body.

Most places note anywhere from 13.1 to 15.8 hours for the half-life.

Products typically require 4 to 5 half-lives to be excreted.

Who should NOT take BioPerine?

Given the complexity of the human body and the variability in individual responses to supplements there is usually a small population that should avoid some supplements.

Anyone taking prescription drugs like lithium, blood thinners, or anything affecting the liver should avoid bioperine as piperine can interact with the metabolism of medications.

Additionally, individuals with bleeding disorders should be avoidant of piperine supplements as it could potentially slow blood clotting, which can lead to the possibility of excess risk of bleeds.

Also of note, anything with IBD should be cautious as they may have an intolerance.

Lastly, pregnant/breastfeeding individuals should not take supplements without explicit consent from their primary care physician as there is not any relevant safety studies for pregnant women taking piperine exclusively to determine it’s ability to be recognized as safe or effectively useful for them.
